Goodbye Columbus International

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is now official. The company BikeTrip has acquired Columbus International's motorcycle rental and tour activity in France.

As Founder and Managing Director, I want to look back over the last 6 years. In 2009, I set up a new business in a new industry in a new country. If that wasn’t enough of a challenge, then add a global recession and the fact I didn’t have a single customer to start with. Despite these odds, nothing was going to stop me from giving Columbus International my best shot. Failure was not an option.

I still remember our first customer. Gareth rented a Ducati Monster for a week. The rest is history. Looking back, a lot of hard work went into Columbus International. And yes, there were sleepless nights, wrong turns and things didn’t always go according to plan. But that’s beside the point. If you step up to a challenge, you make the most of that opportunity. As the late Colin McRae said: “If in doubt – go flat out”.

In a few short years, we grew from a start-up to offering France’s largest choice of BMW, Ducati and MV Agusta rental motorbikes. We became Official Partner for BMW, Continental Tires and the City of Cannes. And, we still rank #1 on TripAdvisor. All this came step by step. If there is one lesson: there is no elevator to success.

It has been quite a ride. I feel lucky to have met some great people during that time: customers, suppliers, business partners and colleagues. Many of you are friends today and I hope we stay in touch. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my family. Without their relentless support, I wouldn’t have lasted two seasons.

Obviously,  you want to know what this means if you’re planning a motorbike holiday in France this year. Apart from myself not being in the business anymore, everything should remain the same. Thanks to BikeTrip, you will receive great service and get to ride exceptional motorcycles in exceptional riding conditions. The website will be re-branded over the next weeks. There will be more rental motorbikes, tours and rental locations. Rest assured, you are in safe hands.

For me it’s time to say goodbye. Thanks for the ride and keep the shiny side up,

AWM
